| Skafo |
Vessels of the Eastern Mediterranean greatly differed by their rigging from that of the Western Mediterranean. If all abovementioned types of ships mainly had Lateen rigging, Levanta vessels often had square rigging, with one of several sprint sails or a combination of both.
The Greek skafo is a clinker-built ship with a sharp stern, a straightly installed mast and a very long sprint sail with a size of a ship herself. The super large sprint sail was nearly square with a slight slope of the head to the mast. Its peculiarity was a 'standing' lift, stretched from the yard arm of the sprint to the top of the mast on which the head of the sail was fastened. The fore-stay was belayed to the straight post and the triangular fore staysail was fastened to it. Skafo had no bowsprit.
