| Smack |
Smack (shmacka) - a sea ship of the Dutch origin spread in the 16-17th centuries at German coasts of the Northern and Baltic Seas. It was a one-and-a-half masted cargo ship with a sprint rigging and a cargo capacity of 20 - 100 last (nearly 40 - 200 registered tons). Many smacks had side sheet anchors and their small mizzenmast was closed to the stern. One of the features of the smack was her high stern bulwark with a 'stern beam' (Germ. 'Heckbalken') which formed an opening above the round stern through which a helm of the rudder passed - a helm port. The mainmast with its permanent topmast above the sprint mainsail on the yard carried a topsail. Three staysails were installed in the bow part of the ship and at that the fore staysail was fastened to the fore stay by sliding blocks while two other jibs were flying.
