| Roman Merchant Ship |
The Roman grain carrier depicted on the picture is referred to 50s of A.D. Her length is 27 m, the width is 7.5 m and her draught is 2 - 2.5 m. Such a ship should have a tonnage not less than 250-300 t. Her mast was installed in the center of a rounded and a very solid hull. It carried a square sail, which was strengthened by two three-corned sails resembling later studding-sails. On the bow there was a short inclined mast like a bowsprit with a small sail - artemon. The existence of the artemon was a serious step forward as due to it the possibility of movement at lateral winds appeared. A swan head decorated the sharply curved stern. On the extruded side balconies - crinolines - there was a pair of powerful steering oars. Superstructure firstly appeared on the Roman grain carriers and it was prototype of a ship's bridge. The master of a ship and passengers were placed there.
