| Russian Fighting Lodiya |
It is well known that oriental Slavs began to navigate in the Black and the Mediterranean Seas in the 6th - 8th centuries. Slavs were skilful shipbuilders. The voyages of the Kiev knight Oleg with his fighting squad to Constantinople in 907 proved the sea qualities of Slavs's vessels. The lodiya (Ladiya) represented herself a sufficiently big ship on board of which there were placed 40 and more people. To enlarge the capacity of the ship they built up additional planking boards on the sides of the chiseled hull made of a whole piece of wood. Ships with clincker-built planking boards were called 'naboyny' (stuffed) and the ships with carvel-built planking boards were called 'nasads' (nozzled). Lodiya carried a large sackcloth sail richly ornamented. The rowers were defended against the sun by an awning.
